Medication: Blister Packing

Blister Packing: What You Need to Know

For several years, Camp Ramah has required that all daily medications (even just one) be blister packed by a pharmacy (also known as compliance packaging in the U.S.).

  • Self-packed medications will not be accepted.
  • Medications that are not blister packed will be blister packed at camp and you will be charged a $30 fee per camper.

This policy is in place to support:

  • Increased safety
  • Accurate administration and tracking
  • Easier packing for trips
  • More efficient distribution at the Marp (health centre)

What Needs to Be Blister Packed?

Daily medications include (but are not limited to):

  • Prescriptions
  • Vitamins (e.g., Vitamin D)
  • Allergy medications (e.g., Reactine, Zyrtec)
  • Supplements (e.g., melatonin)

Important notes:

  • Manufacturer packaging (pop-out packs or individual packets) must still be blister packed by a pharmacy
  • Gummies are strongly discouraged (they melt, stick, and are difficult to distribute)
  • Whenever possible, switch to chewable formats ahead of camp

Exceptions (do NOT need blister packing):

  • Oral contraceptives
  • Liquids and powders
  • “As-needed” medications (should be sent in original packaging)

Finding a Pharmacy

We recommend starting with your regular pharmacy and asking if they offer blister packing.

  • If they do not, independent pharmacies are often more likely to provide this service
  • Many pharmacies offer direct insurance billing and no fee for blister packing (if medications are filled through them)

Quick FAQ

Q: Our pharmacy won’t blister pack medications. What are my options?

A: See the above list of pharmacies our team has vetted that will blister pack medications. If you are from city not listed above, try and contact an independent pharmacy as they’re more likely to blister pack over a chain pharmacy.Q: My child only takes one medication daily. Does it still need to be blister packed?
A: Yes.

Q: My child’s allergy medication comes in packaging so that the individual pill can easily be popped out the back, or it comes in single dose packages. Does this need to be blister packed?

A: Yes. It must be taken out of the manufacturer packaging and brought to a pharmacy to be blister packed.

Q: What about medications taken only on certain days?
A: Yes, these must be blister packed so they are administered correctly.

Q: Do “as-needed” medications need blister packing?
A: No, send these in original packaging.

Q: What about liquid medications?
A: Liquid medications cannot be blister packed. However, many liquid medications also come in chewable form. If the liquid medication your child takes is for seasonal allergies, these are available in chewable/meltable form in many brands and this method is highly preferred. Liquids are messy, cause lots of waste with disposable cups and take more time to dispense. Chewable versions of these medications can and should be blister packed if being taken as a daily medication. If the pharmacist says they cannot, ask them to cut the individual chewable from its package and blister pack a dose inside its packaging.
